This ‘progress’ report on MXF describes its origins, provides a brief technical overview of how it works and covers its adoption and application to date. In addition, it addresses some interoperability issues it has, describes how metadata is handled and concludes with a look to its future as a wrapper.
This brief report (11 pages) presents a good overview of a complex standard, MXF, a wrapper currently under serious consideration to be labeled ‘recommended’ by the audiovisual digital preservation community. It is written by one of the experts on MXF and is thus informed by real experience and detailed knowledge. It should be noted that the author is owner of MOG, one of the two or three small companies who make a living out of MXF support and software and therefore may not be considered an independent view, but rather, a ‘company view’. Good for nonspecialists with some technical understanding.
