This is a set of non-prescriptive ‘best practice’ guidelines for creating comprehensive and consistent citations of moving image and sound. More information about the project responsible for their creation can be found here. The guidelines begin with definitions of the five sub-groups the compilers have defined: film, television, radio, other audio and new media. This is then followed with detailed guidelines per subgroup with examples. The appendices provide a set of controlled vocabulary for some of the elements.
Although some catalogers may wonder about some of the choices made in these guidelines (given existing cataloging standards and controlled vocabulary lists), the value of promoting ‘consistent and comprehensive’ citations far outweighs any argumentation against the chosen forms. Anything to increase the use and proper citation of audiovisual resources in scholarly research should be considered a welcomed addition to the field.
