The Digital Moving Image Archives (DMIA) guide is designed for independent filmmakers to provide basic information about preserving digital data and to encourage collaboration with moving image archives. Rather than focus on individual file formats or specific “archival standard” formats, the purpose is to provide a road map for digital survival. The DMIA primarily addresses born-digital moving image data – audio and video created using digital equipment. The strategies discussed can be applied to any multimedia or computer-generated digital data, and to analog film or tape that is transformed to digital format. Based on Film Forever, this website was created by the author in partial fulfillment of the Master of Advanced Study in American Media and Popular Culture, Arizona State University.

As stated in its introduction, this website presents primarily an introduction to the preservation of born-digital moving image data and is solely designed to help independent filmmakers think about preservation before they start creating content. Clearly written and not overwhelming for beginners, it is informative without being too intimidating. It provides links to the more concrete information a filmmaker would need to study before actually starting a preservation project. Its strongest asset is its continual push for collaboration with archivists and specialists.
