This document sets forth guidelines for digitizing moving image materials for CARLI
Digital Collections (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois). It provides a set of recommendations for technical specifications that digital objects should adhere to, as well as a discussion of digital video concepts, file formats, web delivery, and digitization workflow. Examples of video content in CONTENTdm systems, links to digital video hardware, software, and vendor services, a sample workflow, and further readings are also provided. This document forms a part of CARLI’s Guidelines for the Creation of Digital Collections.

Although created for an academic and research library consortium, this is an excellent best practices resource for all kinds of moving image archives. It is particularly helpful for smaller archives with few technical specialists in that it not only clearly explains fundamental technical concepts about digital video, it offers best practice as well as acceptable practice regarding the creation of archival quality files, acknowledging the reality of what smaller institutions can handle regarding storage, access and other management issues. Its chapter on understanding digital video is especially helpful for archivists looking to determine which digital video technical metadata attributes are essential to document in a digital repository.
It does not offer detailed digitization workflow information but does provide a short overview of the approach and offers considerations on outsourcing and links to vendors.
