The Role of Standards for the Preservation of Audiovisual Material

This webinar is an introduction to standards in the context of audiovisual preservation. It will start with basics on what standards are, how they are created and which purposes they serve. The webinar will discuss the potential benefits of using standards in audiovisual preservation as well as the additional efforts that may be needed. Moreover it will spot some potential barriers to the adoption of standards and new technologies. There will be a brief overview on the wide range of standards that can be useful in the context of audiovisual preservation. Some more details will be given on recent work in MPEG on the Multimedia Preservation Application Format (MPAF).

This webinar is of interest for professionals working in preservation of audiovisual collections and are involved in planning preservation workflows, designing systems and selecting tools. In all these areas standards for essence, metadata, system design, storage, etc. play a role and are an aspect to be considered. The content of the webinar addresses all types of audiovisual collections.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn what is considered a standard, the differences between formal standard and a de facto standard, and their strengths and weaknesses. The potential benefits and efforts related to the use of standards are being discussed. Participants will get a brief overview of existing standards in the field of multimedia preservation. Finally the webinar will introduce recent standardisation activities in multimedia preservation, giving an update on the MPEG Multimedia Preservation Application Format (MPAF) activities.
