This “Lessons Learned” report focuses on the issues that arose during the British Library Sound Archive’s first digitization project which took place between 2004 and 2007. Topics covered include the management of external contractors, dealing with complicated rights clearance processes, the actual digitization and ensuring the sustainability of digitisation and the delivery of online resources. Each “lesson learned” includes background information and resulting recommendations.

A useful document, this report provides a practical and realistic look at a finished digitization project. It provides interesting insight to any organization, small or large, about to undertake a digitization project. It could also be considered a good model for other institutions to follow, to ensure greater dissemination of practical experience within the archive community.
