A report presenting the results from more than 400 responses to a survey sent between 2005-2006, to 600 (national) archives, (national) libraries, (national) film and sound archives, film museums, academies of science, research institutes and professional societies in Europe. The survey was done under the auspices of the TAPE project. It presents the trends and directions as well as the concerns and ambitions of these audiovisual collection holders regarding audiovisual preservation, digitization, access and use.
This well written report, covering a constituency often overlooked, presents undeniable conclusions including the most important: that there is a lot of valuable material in places currently unable to guarantee its long-term preservation needs. The report is clearly written and supports arguments for more training, resources and the need to agree on preservation standards. The quotes from respondents throughout the report make the statistics and analysis more interesting and reveal a passionate group of people who care about their collections. Interesting for policy makers, funding organizations as well as anyone looking for a good overview of the state of ‘minority’ audiovisual collections in Europe, located primarily in heritage institutions.
