JISC Project Report: Digitisation Programme: Preservation Study April 2009

This report presents a study of the measures taken to protect the investment in the digitisation itself by 16 JISC funded digitization projects (two of which involved audiovisual collections). The study focused primarily on the measures taken to protect digital masters and the metadata associated with them. The publication includes a comprehensive report, a portfolio of case studies and a suite of recommendations meant to inform the JISC about the preservation elements and methodologies adopted in the Digitisation Programme.

Because the report is based on a survey of real case digitization projects, it presents operationally based recommendations, not just theoretical proposals. The role staff and expertise play in successfully carrying out suggested recommendations is helpful. The list of survey questions coupled with some ‘example’ answers offers a practical methodology. This report is important reading for management as well as any internal group (taskforce, working group) tasked with undertaking such an assessment.
